Pibbin the Small by Gloria Repp

Posted By Audiobook Librarian

Pibbin-the-Small
Pibbin, smallest of treefrogs, is desperate to get help for his injured turtle friend, but how can he find a doctor? The other frogs warn him that it’s a long, fearful journey. “You’ll run into snakes and that giant bullfrog,” they say. “Black Snapping Crabs might eat you.”

“Am I too small?” Pibbin asks himself. “Too small to be brave?”

In spite of his fears, Pibbin sets off with his new pal, Leeper, and they hop into a more dangerous mystery than anyone ever expected.

Pibbin the Small is Book 1 in the TALES OF FRIENDSHIP BOG
Book 2, The Story Shell, and Book 3, Trapped, are also available as audiobooks.

Targeted Age Group: Ages 5 and up
Genre: Children

What was your inspiration for this book?
On a warm spring night in New Jersey, I listened to Pine Barrens Treefrogs for the first time, and I will never forget their earnest songs: “Wonk-wonk-wonk!” A friend gave me one of those small green creatures to hold, but my delight was short-lived. I felt the frog’s tiny feet scrabbling against my palm, I opened my fingers, and it was gone.

I asked myself, “Could anything so delicate also be brave? What adventures might he have?” The story of a little treefrog named Pibbin began to grow. He’d be small, but he would have a large heart of concern for his friends. As I thought further, I decided that Pibbin’s adventures should be easy to read–for all children to enjoy–and I would gather them into a collection: TALES OF FRIENDSHIP BOG.

When you wrote the book did you know you were going to offer it as an audiobook?
No.

Why did you decide to produce an audiobook?
I know that children enjoy listening to stories as well as reading them, and as the audiobook market began to grow, I realized that my books would be a good fit.

My son was a professional radio journalist at the time, and he was also producing audiobooks. I thought his deep, expressive voice would be excellent for narrating TALES OF FRIENDSHIP BOG, so I asked if he would consider taking on the project, and he agreed with enthusiasm.

How did you choose the reader for the book and the production company?
I wanted to go with Audible/ACX because I had published TALES with Amazon, and I had confidence that they would handle the details professionally.

If someone is thinking about creating an audiobook, what advice would you give them?
Make sure the narrator gives you a sample reading before you begin and listen to other books he/she has narrated. See what you can find out about the producer, as well. The audio-book process can be arduous, and it’s important to have confidence in your production team.

Audio Book: Feels Like the First Time by Shawn Inmon @shawninmon

Posted By Audiobook Librarian

Feels-Like-the-First-Time-1200-sq-copy
Feels Like the First Time is actually two stories, book-ended together.

In the first, two young people in the 1970’s meet, become friends and fall in love, in a story as old as time. Eventually, the two are separated by forces beyond their control and don’t see each other again for many years.

The book-end tale shows what happens when those two young lovers meet again, completely by chance, or fate, thirty years later.

Does the enduring power of first love last forever, and can it overcome anything? The answer, along with a nostalgic walk through the ’70s, is in Feels Like the First Time.

Targeted Age Group: 40+
Genre: Memoir/Romance/Coming of Age

What was your inspiration for this book?
I met the love of my life when I was just a boy. We became best friends, and over time I realized that I trusted and cared about her more than anyone else in my life. After several years of being together, we were separated against our will. I didn’t see her for almost 27 years, but I never forgot her.

In 2009, fate conspired to give us a most unlikely opportunity – to find out if what we had felt all those years ago had endured.

Before that chance to be reunited had arisen, I had already written many thousands of words about the girl I still loved, so when we finally got to resolve our long-held feelings for each other, I knew I had to write the story. Initially, I did it just for my own private remembrance, but my oldest sister Terri convinced me to release the story to the public. That’s why the book is dedicated to her.

Once I decided to publish our story, I knew I wanted it to be out there in as many formats as I could – ebook, paperback, and of course audio. Once I decided to publish our story, I knew I wanted it to be out there in as many formats as I could – ebook, paperback, and of course audio. As soon as the book was published, I began looking for a narrator that could bring the book to life.

Why did you decide to produce an audio book?
I am a huge fan of audiobooks. I have done many cross-country road trips, and they were all made more memorable by listening to books. A reader just emailed me a few weeks ago and said that he and his wife had driven from Canada to Florida and listened to my book on the trip. He said they often had to stop the story so they could talk about something I had written about – a situation, a song, a memory. That made my whole week.

How did you choose the reader for the book and the production company?
I actually attended a vocational school for radio broadcasting and worked in radio as a deejay for ten years. At the school I attended, I met lots of friends who also went on to long careers in radio, and one of them was Jeff Conwell. I had always admired his talent and professionalism, so when I was looking for a narrator of my story, he was my first and only choice. The fun thing about the process of creating the book is that Jeff and I are about the same age and grew up in the same area. Time and again as he was producing the audio book, he would send me an email and say “I was there, too!” Even though we didn’t know each other at the time, our paths had crossed many times before. It was serendipity![/gravityforms]

If someone is thinking about creating an audio book, what advice would you give them?
To me, there is no downside to producing an audio version of your book. It is one more way to reach readers, and one more way to bring your story to life. What else would you like to share with readers about your audio book?
This is a very emotional book, and I am happy to say that comes across in the audio version. I was lucky to work with a narrator who put so much of himself into the production of the book. It’s not just that he has an excellent voice, but that he cared so much about getting every detail of the production right.

As an author, it was odd to hear my story – my life, really – coming out of a speaker in someone else’s voice. I forgot about that in the first ten minutes I was listening, though, and just enjoyed the great storytelling Jeff Conwell did.

Audio Book: Lyon’s Legacy by Sandra Ulbrich Almazan

Posted By Audiobook Librarian

Lyons-Legacy-NookSometimes being a geneticist isn’t enough to understand your family….

Joanna Lyon is the great-granddaughter of the legendary TwenCen musician Sean Lyon. She may have inherited her ancestor’s musical talent, but her parents’ bitter divorce and her Uncle Jack’s attempts to remake her into another Sean have left her hostile toward her family and music. Her passion is for science, but since she has no access to the family funds, she struggles to earn enough credits for graduate school. Then her uncle sets up a business deal with her employer to make Joanna go on a mission for him: travel via the spaceship Sagan to an alternate TwenCen universe where Sean is still alive. Joanna must collect a DNA sample from Sean so her uncle can create a clone of him. She refuses at first, but finally agrees to go. Secretly, however, Joanna believes her uncle will exploit the clone, and she plans to sabotage the project to stop him. But when she falls in love with one of the scientists in the Sagan’s genetics lab, clashes with other time travelers who fear she’ll change how history develops on the alternative TwenCen Earth, and receives devastating personal news, Joanna will find herself pushed to her limit even before she comes face-to-face with her hated ancestor. Their encounter will leave her changed forever. Will she still be able to thwart her uncle’s plan, and what will she have to sacrifice to do so?

Approximately 36,000 words.

Targeted Age Group: adult
Genre: science fiction

What was your inspiration for this book?
I’m a big Beatles fan and wanted to write a scene with an observer from the future traveling back in time to watch them perform at the Cavern in Liverpool. From there, I started asking myself questions as to why the traveler was there and what her goal was. This helped me developed my main character, Joanna. I eventually rewrote the story to be about a fictional rock star instead of the Beatles, but I tried to retain some of their flavor. When you wrote the book did you know you were going to offer it as an audio book?
No, I didn’t know how easy it was for independent authors to create audiobooks of their work until after I’ve already published Lyon’s Legacy.

Why did you decide to produce an audio book?
I put my book into audio format so it could reach a wider audience.

How did you choose the reader for the book and the production company?
I submitted my audiobook project through ACX. A couple of people auditioned for the work, but the second reader did a great job of capturing my main character’s personality.

If someone is thinking about creating an audio book, what advice would you give them?
Go through Audiobook Creation Exchange (https://www.acx.com/). It’s a service that connects authors with producers and narrators, then distributes the finished project.
